The traditional lifestyles of developing countries have an increasing number of tourists. As a side effect, this has been preventing people in developing countries from adopting modern ways of living. Do you agree or disagree with the statement? Many developing countries such as China, Thailand and South Africa have become very popular tourists destinations for their rich cultural heritages. Concerns are raised that tourism poses a threat to those countries’ development.
Tourism industry is significant in a nation’s poverty reduction and modernization. On the macro level, it effectively brings revenue into local economies from overseas that would otherwise not be earned. Tourism-generated sales, production, employment, and communications both directly and indirectly promote the modernization of the area. China is one of the most popular destinations among developing countries and you cannot deny that major tourist cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou are high modernized as well. In the micro perspective, tourists from developed countries influence the surrounding demography with modern changes as the new ways of living are introduced. Some of the foreign tourists are so attracted by the area that they decide to settle down and invest and the influence last longer and stronger.
Yes, tourism can be a disaster while macro-regulations are the real cause for stymied development. Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand’s failure to copy Asian Dragons’ success indicates that tourism as the backbone industry may brings a rapid economic growth but to achieve highly developed economies, comprehensive economic models and farsighted strategies such as risk aversion in 1997 financial crisis are more essential. Other negative impacts will arise when the amount of visitors is greater than the environment’s coping capabilities and preservation are inadequate. Nevertheless all of them can be avoided with proper regulations by government.
To sum up, every opportunity comes with risks so as tourism. In my opinion, tourism contributes greatly to a nation’s economic growth as well as modernization. Its side effects can be avoided which should not be an obstruction of any countries’ development in a big picture.
