Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Group and team activities are more important than the activities done alone, because they teach us important life skills. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Recent years have witnessed much discussion revolving round the issue of whether group activities are necessarily superior to individual activities or not. Despite some valid arguments that people can acquire more knowledge and experience through performing task alone, it is my personal belief that teamwork offers invaluable and essential social skills that could hardly be acquired from individual activities. The primary reasons for my perspective are as follows.
First of all, working in a team setting is the most effective method to cultivate students’ interpersonal skills as well as communication techniques. It is a disputable fact that individuals have to learn how to understand their colleagues, how to cooperate with each other and how to contribute their personal strengths to the team goal, which not only boosts effectiveness and efficiency of team collaboration, but also encourage each team members to fully utilize their talents and skills to facilitate the overall cooperation of their team.
Admittedly, convincing arguments can be made that undertaking a task by an individual alone is highly regarded to the development of independence and social adaptability. Apparently, when supports from teammates are absent from performing individual task, people tend to think and make decision independently. Furthermore, there is no doubt that people who are entirely equipped with the capability of solving problem by themselves are expected to be more socially adaptable and ambitious. Nonetheless, I would contend that individual-focused activities pose the risks of individualism—the root cause of social isolation which is detrimental to people’s mental and psychological health.
By way of conclusion, I must once again reaffirm my position that working as a team far outweighs individual activities .Given the threat posed by individualism, we should make every possible effort to teach the next generation the importance of collaboration in their further career.
