Governments should change the way individuals live while others believe they should choose the way themselves. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
A well-functioned government burdens the responsibilities to lead its citizens to live high quality life, and at the same time, every individual has the freedom to choose their own lifestyle. Whether a government or the citizen should have the say of the way people live leads to varied reactions when viewed from different perspectives. This essay aims to explore the topic from two standpoints and draw some constructive conclusions.
Firstly, government should take action to change living habits of people if they lead a unhealthy life. As not everyone has enough knowledge and qualification on the aspect of health, they may just follow advertisements or unreliable consultants, which, inversely, could increase the potential risk of unhealthy lifestyle. Therefore, government should formulate policies to guide citizens to establish healthy lifestyles. Secondly, ordinary people are limited to change all the patterns of living, such as housing, food supply and etc. By contrast, a government has sufficient resources and funds to accomplish major projects. The South-to-North Water Diversion Project of China is a vivid showcase of how a government takes the whole situation into account and plans accordingly to improve its citizen’s life.
On the other hand, every individual should have the free will to choose the ways they live. For example, on the topic of education, people should be allowed to decide what kind of knowledge they want to learn, because only they themselves truly understand their inner voice and where their real interests rest. A democratic government always places its citizens’ liberty in the first place and the people are empowered with freedom of choosing different lifestyles.
Just as Abraham Lincoln once said:” Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth.” The purpose of a government is to better serve its citizen. Therefore, to the question who decides the way people live, the answer lies in how the governments’ policies or our own choices help to improve our life quality.
