有些人认为健康是人的基本需求,因此医疗服务不应该有盈利性质的私人企业运营。你认为私人医疗缺点大于优点吗?

Some people think that good health is a basic human need so the medical service should not be run by profit-making private companies. Do you think the disadvantages of private health care outweigh the advantages?

The statement that private companies should not be allowed to run medical service sounds unreasonable to my ears, since the advantages of private health care far outweigh the disadvantages.

In the first place, private health care institutions, especially those community health centers and clinics, can bring more conveniences and better service to people. For example, when you have some minor illness like the flu, a stomachache or sore throat, would you go to the state-owned hospital where you have to wait for long hours or a private community clinic where instant treatment is always available?

Besides, private health care services give people an alternative to state-owned hospitals which are, in most cases, equally profit-oriented. What is more, if you notice the heavy demand for timely medical treatment and consultations in the vast rural areas where adequate health care is far from enough, you will understand what an important role that the private health care institutions are playing.

Admittedly, there are also problems associated with the proliferation of private hospitals and clinics. For example, complaints about the treatment and professional capability in the private medical institutions have been on the rise and the reports about medical accidents in small hospitals or clinics are not few in recent years. However, these problems can be solvable if the practioners are required to be well trained and the standards to set up private medical institutions are raised.

To sum up, private health care is necessary. There is no point in arguing whether medical service should be run by profit-making private companies. Instead, we should argue how to make them better serve the public.
